Can I just tell you how much I like this book? If you have a student, then you need to have them read this book. I learned so much from this book and now I'm going to have my 14 year old read it.
This book talks gives you the science behind the brain. It helps you understand how to use this information in order to use your brain more efficiently. I love that it brings up the multiple intelligences as well as what are the best study techniques.
I learned about the "focused brain" and "diffuse" brain. The focused brain is obvious. It's when you are focused on something. The diffuse brain is the opposite. It's when you are taking a break and letting your brain relax. The important thing about these two "brains", if used properly, can really help you learn. If you spend too much time using "focused brain", then you are not using your brain efficiently. You need to balance your focused brain and diffuse brain in order to learn more.
This came into play with my 14 year old. The day after I read the chapter about if you are having trouble learning, he put this into practice without even knowing it. He got up early one morning and started working on his math. He started struggling with it and decided to stop and move on to another subject. This is exactly what the book says to do.
It's funny to notice things that we already are doing, but don't realize it's important for our brains. I really liked the part about how some video games are good for people to play. I thought that it was interesting how even some video games are being FDA approved to hep with the memory of older people. My mom thought that this was great because her and my dad like to play video games. They also like to do school with the boys because, as she says, "It's good for my brain." She was right, again.
I really love this book. Like I said before, my 14 year old is going to be reading this. It will really help him understand why his brain functions the way that it does. I am very thankful for this.
You have got to get a hold of this book. It can be a real life-changer!
