Heroes of History ~ Milton Hershey Review

Updated: Jul 3

Chocolate! Who doesn't love chocolate? Well, we love chocolate, especially Hershey chocolate. I saw the name of Milton Hershey on the list of Heroes of History by YWAM Publishing. I gave our third grader a few choices from the list, secretly hoping that he would choose the Hershey book. Imagine my joy when he did. Then, all we had to do was wait for it to arrive. While we waited, I downloaded and printed the Study Guide that comes along with the book.

Then it arrived! Hooray! We were ready, too.

I mean, you can't read about Milton Hershey and NOT eat Hershey's chocolate. Right? (Thanks, Grandma for the bag of kisses!)

I decided to use this book as a read aloud with our him. I am not that great at reading books aloud to him and I thought that this would be a great opportunity. I was right. It definitely was. We put aside our normal reading curriculum to put our attention fully on this book. We needed the mix up in our routine. It was wonderful to just sit and read with him.

We loved this book. It really does an outstanding job of portraying the entire story. I have to be honest, I didn't know much about the creator of the delicacy I love to indulge in. I knew about Hershey, Pennsylvania, but did you know that he created his very own city? I thought that they just named a city after him. Nope. That was all his doing. He was a wonderful human being. He really cared about people and their well-being. You have got to read this book. It's not just about chocolate.

It's not just a book either! It comes with a Study Guide. There are questions that go with each chapter. These questions aren't just simple "Yes" and "No" questions. The questions actually increase in difficulty. The first few are a little easier ones, but then they get harder.

The Study Guide isn't just a bunch of questions, though. YWAM really wants to help you, the homeschool parent, know how to use this book as a curriculum. Anyone here love books? My hand is raised, if you couldn't see it. We know that it's great for our kids to read. I would love that they can read a book for school. That's all great, but sometimes it takes a lot of time to fit that book into the curriculum that we are using and then for them to do something with it when they are done with the book. YWAM has done all of that for us.

Here are some of the items that are in the Study Guide:

And Much More!

Look at what our son decided to make. I simply told him that he will need to do some sort of product by the time that we were done reading the book. He thought of it that day and wanted to make it. Isn't his Hershey Kiss the greatest? I love that this book inspired him to be creative!

We didn't stop there, though. There is a chocolate factory (not Hershey) about 30 minutes away from where we live. I thought that it would be great to visit the chocolate factory so he could see what all of that machinery looks like and what it looks like to actually make chocolate. We were so glad that Grandma Edie and Grandpa Ed were able to come with us! We all had a great time!

Look at what we did!

I just love when good literature leads to other things without a whole lot of work trying to make things fit. All of this great fun and learning was inspired by the ideas in the Study Guide!

Last year, our oldest son read the book about C.S. Lewis. He really liked that book. I liked that it was written in such a way that even our then 12 year old son would like it. If I had to pick, I think I would like to read the Thomas Edison, Harriet Tubman, Meriwether Lewis books next. It's so hard to choose, though. I really do like their books and want to read them all!

YWAM writes great literature that is educational and enjoyable. I love the Study Guide that comes along with the book. Thank you YWAM Publishing for writing the Milton Hershey book as a part of the Heroes of History series. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
