Iliad & Odyssey Complete Set - Review

Recently, our oldest (12 years old) started asking about Greek mythology and was wanting to learn more about it, when we were blessed with being able to review the Iliad & Odyssey Complete Set by Memoria Press! Wow! What a blessing and right when we needed (wanted) it.

There was so much included in this package it was like Christmas! We were blessed with the book, Student Guide, Teacher Guide, aaaannnddd (drum roll, please!) the Instructional DVDs for both the Iliad as well as the Odyssey! I'll be honest...my favorite part is the Instructional DVDs. I'll tell you why later.

I want to tell you about this wonderful product by Memoria Press. They have really made these great books about ancient Greece understandable for us "normal" folks. I never thought that I would be reading anything by Homer let alone be using them in our homeschool with our 7th grader. What?! Really?! Yes, our 7th grader is going through (and understanding) ancient Greece and how they saw the gods and life. Crazy, right? But, Memoria Press really did such a wonderful job with these two books and added materials.

These were translated from Homer by Samuel Butler who put it into modern English, thank you! It was difficult to read (I read it aloud to our 7th grader) because of all of the names of people and places. Sthenelus, Phthires, Aeacus, Iphinöus, and Areïthoüs? Really? What are those two dots above the letters?

But other than murdering all of those names (and many - MANY more), we were able to get through a good portion of the Iliad with the help of the Instructional DVDs. These DVDs have got to be my favorite part of this set because they were what really helped our son to understand the entire picture of what was going on in the book.

I have to tell you a funny story about when we watched the DVD for the first book (that's what the "chapters" are called). My son and I were watching the video and he actually tried to talk to the teacher (Sean Brooks) as he was explaining book 1 of the Iliad. Now, you have to understand my son - he's a verbal learner. He learns by talking about what he's learning in order to completely understand (that's why he kept getting in trouble in kindergarten in public school - but that's a story for another time.) He caught himself when the teacher didn't discuss it with him. We both chuckled a little when he gave me probably the biggest compliment, "I thought he was you because you talk and teach like that." Ok, that may not seem like a compliment, but from him, it was! He was telling me that he thinks that I'm a good teacher (I'm taking it!).

Sean Brooks discusses each book on the DVD and seems so approachable that our 7th grader was so engrossed in the video that he thought that he was there for real. That's a great DVD in my book. If you've drawn in my 7th grader - that's a success!

The sets come with a Student Guide which have a list of characters, comprehension questions, quotations, and discussion questions for each of the books (chapters). The questions that they have aren't just Yes or No questions, but really make the student think. Then there's the Teacher Guide which gives all of the answers to the Student Guide, but it doesn't stop there. They have included background information, discussion help, questions to mark for the test, teacher notes, and essay and assignment ideas. They have also included tests at the end (with answers!).

I have to say that I absolutely LOVE that these are made by a Christian Education Company! I know some Christians who would say that it's wrong to learn about the Greek gods because they think that it's idol worship. I love how the DVDs really bring out that what the Greeks believed about the gods was wrong and that we believe in the One True God. Thank you, Memoria Press, for making it easier on this Christian mom whose son wants to learn about Greek mythology, for creating materials that show what they believed and how that's not what we believe.

I am thoroughly impressed with this Iliad & Odyssey Complete Set by Memoria Press! They have made learning about ancient Greek culture and mythology easy (as easy as it can be). In this set, they have really included everything to make your child (and you) successful! I love that! We are so excited to finish the Iliad and then move on to the Odyssey!

Come on over and read more reviews of this great product along with many others!
