Having Focus

As a homeschool mom, I seem to focus on what my children need to learn or what character traits they need to work on. I rarely put much effort, time, or focus into what I need to work on for myself. My children will only be as good as I can be. If I don’t continue to grow spiritually, mentally, and physically, I won’t be able to keep up with their constant change for very long. Usually at the beginning of every year, I make resolutions in order to “do better” this year. The problem with these resolutions is that the are usually unrealistic and unfounded.

This year will be different though. Instead of making resolutions that I won’t keep, I am going to be working on traits that I want to work on and back them up with verses from the Bible to have a greater impact on my life.

Change takes time. Focus takes time. If I jump into all of these things at once, I will burn out, lose focus, and quit. I have the entire year to work on this list and that’s what it will take in order to making last change. I am going to be working on each of these items for 1 month at a time and adding to them each month.

Do I expect to be wonder woman by the end of the year? No way. I am realistic about all of this. These are items that will take a lifetime to perfect. I just want to focus on one thing at a time in order to improve in that area of my life.

I have put together the list here, but each month, as I am working on each task, I will be writing more on how it is going and what it looks like in "real life".

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 - These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

April: Build Up My House

Proverbs 14:1 - The wisest of women builds her house,

but folly with her own hands tears it down.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 - There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven-

A time to give birth and a time to die;

A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.

A time to kill and a time to heal;

A time to tear down and a time to build up.

A time to weep and a time to laugh;

A time to mourn and a time to dance.

A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones;

A time to embrace and a time to shun embracing.

A time to search and a time to give up as lost;

A time to keep and a time to throw away.

A time to tear apart and a time to sew together;

A time to be silent and a time to speak.

A time to love and a time to hate;

A time for war and a time for peace.

And does not eat the bread of idleness.

As you can see, there are 12 items that I want to focus on this year, one for each month of 2017. The overall focus is to be a woman of excellence, though. Everything that I do should be done with excellence. Do I expect to be perfect, no, of course not. I know that I will make mistakes and I need to be prepared for those so I don't get disappointed in myself. This list will take time, but it will help me to focus on one aspect at a time, while building on the ones that I've already worked on.

I have put together a printout if you'd like to use this for your year as well.

Let me know what you are planning on focusing on this year! I'd love to hear about it so I can pray for you and encourage you along the way! Let me know what I can do to help!
