Review of Heirloom Audio Productions' Captain Bayley's Heir

September 25, 2017

Well, Heirloom Audio Productions has done it again with Captain Bayley's Heir! It was fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

We liked listening to it as we ate breakfast. We just slipped the CD into the computer and off we went onto another adventure. We listened to one track a day for a couple of weeks. There are 2 CDs each with 10 "chapters" each. To be honest, when it got to the end of the CD we just had to listen to the last few all together. We just couldn't wait until the next day to find out what happened.

Yes, it's that good. The sound effects are so real that it's like you're watching a movie - but it's in your head. We stared at the computer screen like it was going to show us something. Crazy, right? In today's world, you would think that our 13 and 8 year olds wouldn't enjoy something that wasn't a big show on the screen. I love that about Heirloom Audio Productions. They guide my boys into stories that they didn't know were out there, but they do it in a way where they can still use their imaginations and go on an adventure in their minds.

Adventure is exactly what I would call Captain Bayley's Heir. It is from the book written by the author G.A. Henty. It's about a young man named Frank. He lives with his uncle, Captain Bayley along with a few others. Along the way he meets and befriends this boy, named Harry. Harry doesn't have the use of his legs and we find out that his parents aren't really his parents. Frank goes to a school where he gets blamed for something that he didn't do. He decides to run away to America in order to make his own way in this world, since he thinks no one believes in him. He make friends as he makes his way in this new world called "California". Yep, you guessed it. He's takes part in the California Gold Rush. He not only finds some gold, but he finds himself as well.

Back home in England, we find out that Captain Bayley's Heir (you know...the title of the story) is actually Harry. Harry turns out to be Captain Bayley's grandson. Captain Bayley gets him some medical help and he can now use his legs with just the help of some crutches.

As we listened to it, we had some favorite sayings:

"My handsomeness is ruined forever!"
(CD 1 Track 6 "Harry's History")

My boys thought that this was hilarious!

"We were so poor I kept a tumbleweed as a pet."

&

"We ate so many armadillos I still roll up in a ball when I hear a dog bark."

(CD 1 Track 10)

This is when Frank meets Abe, Rube, and Dickens on his way to California.

"He burps poetry."

(CD 2 Track 4 "Pay Dirt, Gentlemen")

Dickens finally talks!

"God's grace is sufficient for me."

"God's grace is a gift - you can't earn it - you just accept it."

(CD 2 Track 6 "Amazing Grace")

Abe talks to Frank about being a preacher. He helps Frank understand that he needs God's grace, not his uncle's approval.

After we finished the story, I asked my boys what they thought about it. Our 13 year old would like to go on an adventure like Frank did, maybe to Greece. Our 8 year old liked the last part when they sang "Amazing Grace".

I love that this isn't "just" a story. There is a study guide that comes along with the Live the Adventure subscription. The study guide isn't "just" a list of questions that go along with the story. There are questions, but it doesn't stop there. There are basic comprehension questions, but then there's vocabulary as well as questions and statements to think a little deeper about. These really get you to process what's happening in the story so you get a "bigger" picture. It also introduces you to the author, G.A. Henty, and has some great Bible studies at the end to further your study.

This is a great story about the California Gold Rush. You and your entire family will love Captain Bayley's Heir from Heirloom Audio Productions!
