Here we are - our last post in our 5 Days of Living the Bible. We've made it! I hope that you've enjoyed reading these as much as I've enjoyed writing them. Most importantly, though, I pray that they have been some help to you in your homeschooling journey. Remembering to put God first, even in your homeschool will show your children that you are really living the Bible in your homeschool.
Today, I'd like to talk about putting aside the curriculum. What?! Why would I put aside my curriculum? I'm supposed to be teaching my children, right? I need curriculum in order to do that.
Sometimes you can teach your children more
by putting the curriculum away.
Here's what I'm talking about. A couple of months after we moved from Oregon to Arizona, my boys were really dragging in school and just weren't acting right. I closed the book we were working out of and asked what was going on. Our youngest starting crying. Come to find out that both of them were struggling with the move and were missing one of their old friends.
This was a prime opportunity to put the books away. They needed to know that I cared more about them, than the books we were studying. They ended up typing out letters to their friend, addressing the envelopes, and mailing them. We put aside curriculum, but they were still learning.
Our oldest is 12 (almost 13) and he has really been struggling this year. Puberty has hit and it's a struggle. Some days he just has so many emotions that he doesn't know what to do. There are days that I end up sitting on his bed with him talking about what's on his mind for a couple of hours. When he's like that, he's not going to get much out of his Science book, but these are the times that I can speak truth into his life and use the Bible to do that.
I really like this verse. I can teach my boys all of the knowledge of this world, but that won't help them with their knowledge of their Heavenly Father. It is my duty as their mother AND teacher to teach them Math as well as how to live the Bible.
Putting aside the books doesn't mean that you aren't teaching
and that they aren't learning.
