Conversation Heart Sentences

February 13, 2017

Here is our 13th activity in our 14 Days of Valentine Activities

What is the first candy that you think of when you think about Valentine's Day? I always think of Conversation Hearts. Here is an activity where you can actually use these delicious candies to practice sentence writing.

This is a fun activity that I used to do with my students in the public school. This is such an adaptable activity, as well, that it is good to do with any age of children.

I'm going to explain the activity, first, and then I'll show you how to adapt it for different age groups.

First of all, you need to get some Conversation Hearts.

Next, you pick out a few that have different saying.

Then, you think of a sentence that goes with each saying. For example, for the saying "call me", your sentence could be, "Call me when you get there," said Mom.

Now you write your sentence putting in the conversation heart in the sentence.

Here is some cute paper for you to use.

Now for how to adapt this activity for any age:

2-4 year olds

Talk with them about what a sentence is. Give them examples of sentences that you could use with that saying. Guide them through the process of making a sentence. Once you both have decided on a sentence, you can write the sentence down while they glue on the heart in the right spot.

Kindergarten/1st Graders

Have them come up with a sentence that uses the saying they have on their heart. Have them dictate the sentence to you while you write it down and they glue the heart in the right spot.

2nd Graders

These guys, by February, should know how to write while using inventive spelling. So guide them through the process of choosing a sentence and then let them write their own sentence while gluing the heart in the right spot. Emphasis a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence and punctuation at the end, but let them know to try their best on spelling.

3rd - 5th Graders

Depending on your child(ren)'s writing ability, they should be writing multiple sentences using multiple hearts. Emphasis using quotations, but not all of them should be.

Middle School

Middle schoolers should be able to choose multiple hearts and build them into a paragraph or two.

High Schoolers

Yes, high schoolers can even do this activity. They could use the 10+ hearts to build a story out of.

So you see, this activity CAN be used with just about any age. Not too many activities can do that. This activity would even work with Reading/Writing Buddies!
