We all have the tendency to slack off from doing our best, this does not exclude our children. Routines get boring, chores are tiresome, and school work gets mundane or even too difficult. Sometimes we just shut down and don’t want to try anymore. (affiliate links are used)
That’s where Colossians 3:23 comes in to our home. This verse was one of our verses that I had our children copy for handwriting practice.
“Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men.”
When I had my kids learn this verse, we first discussed it. We broke it down into its parts:
1 - Whatever you do - means any little thing that you do, not just somethings
2 - do your work heartily - means with all of your heart
3 - as for the Lord rather than for men - means to work as if God was asking you to do it
When my kids are wanting to not do their best on their chores or school work, I remind them of this verse. With our oldest, I only have to say the book, chapter, and verse. He mumbles out the verse and then gets to work. He knows what he’s supposed to do, he just doesn’t want to.
Isn’t that like all of us? I know it sounds like me. I get tired of cleaning the house. I get tired of doing the laundry. I get tired of homeschooling. There, I said it. Sometimes I get tired of homeschooling.
But, I need to remember Colossians 3:23.
I need to remember to always do my best…no matter what.
