Smarter with Food

Food - glorious food! I love sweets and snacks. I'm like Augustus Gloop in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (ok...not that bad). My kids like their snacks too, unfortunately I've rubbed off on them.

I don't think food is bad. I don't even think that it's bad to have a candy bar here and there. The problem that I have is that I can't seem to stop eating foods that are bad for me. Also, if I'm having a rough day, I go to food for comfort.

Not only that, but cooking is not the best for me. I don't mind making breakfast or even lunch. I like to bake once in awhile. It's dinner. That's the one that gets my goat. I struggle with dinners. Am I alone in this?

I'm more of a morning person than an evening person. Always have been. My husband used to say that I was a 9-1 person. Funny, right? Not so much. Anyways - I get up with my husband at 4AM. Yep, you read that right - 4:00 in the morning! He leaves around 4:30 and then I (usually) stay up to get some writing and computer work done. So, by the time 5:00PM rolls around, I've already been up for 13 hours and (to be honest) I'm done. I'm tired. I'm cranky. I just want to sit on the couch and veg. But, I can't. Someone has to make dinner - and that someone is...ding ding ding! Me!

All joking aside, I do struggle with making dinners so this month is the month that I'm going to focus on this and try to make this a better part of my day.

Here is our inspiration for this month:

She is like merchant ships;

She brings her food from afar.

She rises also while it is still night

And gives food to her household

And portions to her maidens.

I'm going to break this one up into 2 parts.

Now do I take this as I have to travel everywhere and/or I have to make exotic gourmet meals? No. We like to eat the same foods and we are on a very strict grocery budget, so this really isn't going to happen in our reality.

Here's what I can do, though. I can find a few new recipes and try them out every once in a while. Maybe a couple new recipes a month to start with would be great. Even if it's just a new side dish or dessert is fine - just something new and interesting. Pinterest is a great place for that. I have started a new Pinterest board on our Homeschool 4 Life Pinterest profile that I will continue adding new recipes onto so that we all will have some choices. I am gluten and dairy free, so there will even be some of those recipes on there as well. I could say that I do this because I wake up early and make my husband's breakfast and pack his lunch - even though it's technically morning. I just take this as she takes care to make sure that her family is well fed. I also see this as her having a good attitude about it. I need to work on those two things.

First off, making sure that my family is well fed, isn't a huge problem for me. I do all of the grocery shopping and I make most of the meals (the ones that I don't make are either at my Mom's house or we order pizza). The problem is that I'm not making sure that they are all getting balanced nutritious meals. Maybe I could make a menu listing what snacks the boys can eat on what days. I have created a simple blank menu for you below if you'd like to print it out.

Secondly, I think this woman would have a good attitude about making food for her family. The problem that I have is a selfishness problem. I don't want to make dinner. I don't want to get up. I want to sit on the couch. I I I Me Me Me. The problem is in the I's and Me's. I need to think of the we and the they's during dinner time knowing that I am providing a service for my family whom I love.
