Talk of the Word

How is your FOCUS going so far this year? We are 2 months in and a lifetime to go. Have all of my decisions gone through the "woman of excellence" filter? Nope. It has been running through my mind more often about what a woman of excellence would do, though. That's how this whole thing is supposed to work.

We won't be changed into women of excellence overnight or even over a year. It happens little by little along the way. Meditating on the Word will help us with this as well. The only way that we will become women of excellence is to know what that is, by what God's Word says about it.

Now we are moving onto the next part of becoming a woman of excellence.

Talk of the Word

What does this mean? Let's look at the Word of God to find out.

These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Did you see all of those ways that we are to talk of the Word? Let's look at them a little closer:

1) These words shall be on your heart

~ How are words on your heart? By meditating on the Word - which was last month's FOCUS. See how all of these fit together? If we aren't in God's Word, we won't be able to talk of the Word with our kids and those around us.

2) Teach them diligently

~ This means that we need to make this a priority. It isn't just a one time event, either. We are to be consistently talking of the Word.

3) Talk of them when you sit in your house

~ While you are sitting watching tv, sitting doing some schoolwork, sitting reading a book together. Talking about the Word of God can "fit" into many situations that we encounter daily. We were just blessed to be able to do a review on a book written by a company, By the Way Book Series, who writes books to help parents talk about God's Word more. Click on over to check out that post.

4) Walk by the Way

~ As you're walking at the grocery store talk about the blessings that God has given to you. As you're taking a walk around your neighborhood talk about God's creation. As you're cleaning the house, talk about what a blessing it is to have this "stuff" to clean.

5) When You Lie Down

~ As you put your kids to bed, talk with them about what God did for them during the day. Talk with your husband before you go to sleep about what God has done for your family. Email a friend before you go to sleep about all of the wonderful things God has done.

6) When You Rise Up

~ When I was working at the preschool, we had a wonderful teacher who would pull all of the children over to the window each morning when the sun rose. She would say to the children, "Look at the sun that God has given us. Thank you God for the sun and for a beautiful new day!" That's putting this verse directly into practice.

There are so many ways that we can talk of God's Word throughout our days. When your children are struggling with something, talk about what the Bible says about that situation. While you are all eating a meal together, talk about the Bible story that you were reading recently.

We have always made it point to make sure that we are incorporating Bible study in our school day. We make it an actual subject in school, just like Math or Science.

I created this printout so that you will be able to post this verse around your house to help you remember to talk about God's Word. Just click on the picture to print it out.

Let's all work on talking about God's Word throughout our day. Make this your FOCUS for the month. I think we'll find that the more that we talk of God's Word, the easier it will get.
