I'm Bored with Homeschool

Did I catch your attention? I hope so. I'm sure I'm not, at least I hope I'm not, the only one out there that gets bored with their homeschool.

It's true, though. I'm bored with our homeschooling. There, I said it. I'm bored. I have to let you in on a little secret in our family. We don't say, "I'm bored" because then Mom finds something for you to do and it's usually something you don't like. But, I think it's a legitimate feeling about homeschooling sometimes. I used to even feel it when I was teaching in the public school. Days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months, etc. I would get into a rut.

I am a very routine and scheduled person. I like routine. I think routine is great for kids and helps them to flourish. I have set up our homeschool in a very routine manner. Planning has even become routine for me. That's a good thing until.....it's not. Routine can become mundane and boring if we let it. Routine can turn into a rut. Routine is a wonderful thing, but sometimes you need to spice it up a little to get some life into it.

Sometimes I feel as though the life of our school has just been sucked right out of it. We are going through the motions, and my children ARE learning, I just wish it could be a little more enjoyable.

My kids feel it, too. They're bored with their schooling. They just won't say it, but I can see it in them. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't think that I'm there to entertain my children into learning. I can't make everything into a game, nor should it be. I feel strongly that they need to understand that they aren't going to like everything in life, but sometimes you still have to just do it. I also don't want our children growing up hating their schooling time.

So, here's my solution. Are you ready for it? Drum roll, please!

We are taking a break! And you know what? I don't even feel guilty about it. I feel a sense of relief, actually. I can take these next 2 weeks and really revamp our school. We've been schooling for 3 1/2 months now and it's time. It's time to look at what we're doing as well as why we're doing it. I sometimes get caught up in the "what's the next page in the book" syndrome when I should be looking at "what's the next concept they need to learn".

I am taking these 2 weeks to reassess everything in their learning and I want to enhance what's not working so well. I'm going to take my own advice and look at how I can change our curriculum to better fit the needs and learning styles of our children.

What if you can't take a break? Sometimes you are involved in co-ops that you can't take a break from. What if you are in the public school? You obviously can't take 2 weeks off, but what you can do is take some time out of your usual planning time to look at things differently. Change the desks/tables around in your classroom to help yourself see things in a new perspective.

I hope that if, and when, you become bored with your homeschooling, that you will give yourself a break to really reassess what you are doing with each of your children and try to do what's best for each of them.

That's why we do this thing called "homeschooling" anyways, right? We want what's best for our kids and we want them to learn the most that they can in the short amount of time they are with us.
