Pinterest - Friend or Foe?

Pinterest was a great idea that someone came up with. You can find just about anything on there: recipes, worksheets, book ideas, housekeeping ideas, etc. You name it, it’s probably on there.

It is very helpful for me as a homeschool mom. I love to be able to go on there, type in a topic that we are learning about and get ideas to use with our schooling.

But, sometimes it can be very overwhelming. You just want a simple activity and they give you a barrage of ideas. You sink into a Pinterest black hole that is hard to get out of. You thought you would be on there for 5 minutes then you look up and it’s been an hour. You pin idea after idea thinking, “those will be great for later”.

That’s the trouble…later. For a procrastinator like myself, that’s a dream come true. I can pin all these things…for later. Do I ever go back to them? Hardly. Some I do, because I know that I have a resource to go to. But, for the most part, they just sit there in their little boards waiting to be completed.

Another thing I need to remember about Pinterest is that these are great things that multiple people have completed. For some reason, I look on there, and I think that I am a horrible mother because I don’t do all of these things. News flash! No one does. People post the best parts of their life and for some reason we think that we are the only ones these things don’t work out for. One person may be able to make cakes that actually look like something, while someone else made up a really good math game.

When we use Pinterest, we need to keep in mind that we don’t have to do it all. We shouldn’t be having heart palpitations because we only survived the day with the children still smiling (somewhat) while we read about someone who had a full week of Summer Camp at their house with all of the neighborhood kids.

Pinterest is a wonderful resource and I use it all of the time to get ideas for homeschooling, cleaning, cooking, and life. I just need to remember that it’s a resource and not a have to. I have enough have-to’s in my life and Pinterest is not one of them.
